Our readers in Los Angeles who are familiar with previous posts here know that certain people who qualify may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits. But, what they may not know is that family members may be able to claim benefits based on an applicant's work history as well. How can family members claim Social Security Disability benefits?
For starters, there are restrictions on exactly who will be able to claim SSD benefits off of the applicant's work history. A spouse could receive benefits, as could children up to a certain age. The restrictions vary based on age and other factors, so families in the Los Angeles area who are looking into whether or not multiple family members may be able to receive SSD benefits will need to get more information about their own unique circumstances. Further, there is a maximum amount that any particular family can receive. If the projected amount to be received is higher than the maximum amount, the total amount will be reduced.
In particular, adult children who are disabled may be able to benefit from these family benefits. The Social Security Administration gives the example of an adult child who has been disabled since birth. If that child's parent begins to receive Social Security benefits the child may be eligible for what is known as a "child's benefit."
For those who are facing an illness or injury that leaves them with a complete inability to work, the Social Security Disability framework can appear to be quite complicated. Los Angeles residents who are at the beginning of the process may find it beneficial to get more information about applying for SSD benefits.
