Are more people living with disabilities than we realize?

Some people in Los Angeles see the benefit in paying for a private short-term disability insurance policy. These people figure that if they suffer an injury, like a broken foot or something else that might keep them from working, it is a good idea to have a source of income while missing work. However, many people either don't have these types of insurance policies, or they suffer injuries that will prevent them from working for much longer than a few weeks.

How many people have injuries or illnesses that hinder their ability to work? Our readers may be surprised to learn that according to the Social Security Administration, an estimated one in five Americans suffer from disabilities. That's about 56 million people.

Now, of course there are many people who have a disability who are able to find some type of job that they can do despite their disability. These people most likely are not receiving Social Security disability benefits. However, there are millions of people who aren't so fortunate.

The Social Security Administration estimates that nearly 38 million Americans have what they term "severe" disabilities. These types of disabilities can happen to anyone -- old, young, professionals or skilled laborers. The good thing is that, whether they are aware of it or not, almost everyone who works in America pays toward a long-term disability insurance policy -- Social Security disability. Therefore, when a person is suddenly afflicted with a severe disability due to an injury or illness, it probably won't take long for a friend or family member to point out that he or she may in fact want to seek SSD benefits.
