Navigating the SSA’s Listing of Impairments

On Behalf of | May 27, 2015 | Social Security Disability Benefits For Illness

Most people who apply for Social Security Disability benefits are not doctors or lawyers. They don’t know and have never asked what certain medical or legal terms are – not until they find themselves unable to work due to a debilitating illness and they need to apply for SSD benefits just to make ends meet.

At our law firm, we attempt to help our clients understand the nature of the application process that everyone has to go through when applying for SSD benefits. The Social Security Administration has what is known as a “Listing of Impairments.” As our Los Angeles readers can probably guess, this is a complex categorization of a wide variety of impairments, injuries and diseases that may qualify a person to receive SSD benefits.

There are so many different medical conditions that could leave a person unable to work that it is quite difficult to categorize or quantify them. Nevertheless, the Social Security Administration has attempted to do so with the Listing of Impairments. There are 14 major categories, ranging from conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system to immune system disorders.

At our law firm we know that the point in life when a person is considering putting together an application for SSD benefits can be difficult. The person may have been employed in a particular job for years – probably a job they liked and were good at. Navigating through the medical and legal terms that are a large part of an application for Social Security Disability benefits can be daunting. We attempt to help our clients through the process.
