Most of our Los Angeles readers know that these days we can do just about anything online. From online shopping to research to entertainment, the Internet has changed the way society operates. The state and federal governments have also been utilizing the latest online technology. In fact, many of our readers who suffer from a disability may be wondering, “Can I apply for Social Security disability benefits online?”

In a word, the answer is “Yes.” But, as with most issues involving any layer of government, there are certain requirements that must be met before a person submits an online application for SSD benefits. Actually, the requirements apply to anyone who is going to submit an application, whether it is online or the old fashioned way.

First, the applicant must be at least 18-years-old. The applicant must not already be receiving Social Security benefits on their own record. Next, applicants must believe that they have a medical disability that is going to keep them from working for at least 12 months. Or, applicants must be able to show that they have a disability that will result in death. Medical documentation will be needed to prove the existence of the disability. A Los Angeles resident can begin the application process on the Social Security Administration website.

Lastly, it is important for a person who has been denied SSD benefits within 60 days to know that they cannot simply submit another application. The proper route to take in this type of situation is to appeal the initial decision. The appeal can be submitted online as well.
