Getting the prompt approval of your Social Security Disability (SSD) claim is something you would no doubt love to see when you apply. Every other applicant also wants this for themselves. Unfortunately, the speed with which your claim is decided depends to a large part (but not exclusively) on how many others are ahead of you waiting to have their claims decided.
One way people can sometimes get ahead is if they have a condition that is on the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) Compassionate Allowances List (CAL).
The Compassionate Allowances List
Around 300 conditions are on the CAL. The idea is that the SSA system should flag them automatically in an application and move that person’s claim onto the fast-track process. Examples of things that qualify include certain cancers, immune system diseases and some rare genetic disorders.
Having a disease or condition on the list does not necessarily mean you will get your money as quickly as you would like. It can still take some time. However, the approval of your claim should be fast-tracked, and this can allow you to spend or borrow and spend for the things you need right now, in the knowledge that you will have payments coming your way soon.
Mistakes in submitting the paperwork or in gathering the required evidence could derail your advantage. As with any SSD claim, it is wise to seek legal guidance to see if you might qualify for the list and to prepare and submit your SSD claim in a manner that gives you the best chances of a quick and positive resolution. If things do not work out as hoped the first time, remember that an appeal is often possible.
