Housing benefits no longer impact SSI eligibility

On Behalf of | Jun 22, 2025 | Social Security Administration News

The Social Security Administration (SSA) oversees multiple types of benefits. People dealing with various kinds of difficult situations may be eligible for benefits. There are retirement benefits to help people cover cost-of-living expenses when they stop working. There are disability benefits for those with serious medical conditions.

There are also benefits available for disabled children, people with visual impairment and older adults with limited resources. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits can be difficult for people to qualify for, as there are strict income and asset limits. Even certain benefits prevent people from qualifying. Recent changes to SSA policies may help more people qualify for SSI.

Housing benefits no longer count against applicants

Previously, only a handful of states allowed people to qualify for SSI benefits if they received housing benefits, and California wasn’t one of them. Frequently, state benefits intended to help make housing affordable are valuable enough to eliminate SSI eligibility.

In California, older adults may qualify for several different types of housing support. Section 8 vouchers, Section 202 supportive housing and subsidizing housing facilities can all help older adults afford housing.

In late 2024, the SSA adopted a new policy that allows SSI applicants in every state to receive the same consideration. Needs-based housing benefits intended to make housing affordable no longer count against applicants who might otherwise qualify for SSI benefits.

Reviewing personal circumstances to determine SSI eligibility with a skilled legal team can help people prepare for the application process. Many people in need of SSI and other Social Security benefits may require assistance from a legal professional to improve their chances of qualifying or support them as they navigate the appeals process.
