Can Californians get SSD benefits and veteran’s benefits?

On Behalf of | Oct 7, 2015 | Social Security Disability Benefits

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is responsible for just one portion of the federal benefits that get paid out to Californians. To be sure, the benefits that the SSA is responsible for are some of the most important, including retirement benefits, Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income. But, there are other types of benefits that a Los Angeles residence can qualify for — one in particular is veteran’s benefits.

Veteran’s benefits can provide a wide variety of positive contributions to a person who has served in our nation’s military. But, what if a veteran is also disabled? Can that veteran qualify to receive SSD benefits in addition to veteran’s benefits?

For most people in this type of situation, the initial answer is, “it depends.” It depends on what type of benefits the person is receiving as veteran’s benefits, and it depends on whether the person qualifies under the rigorous qualifications that come with applying for SSD benefits.

A veteran in Los Angeles who is disabled will probably want to get more information on whether, in their individual situation, they qualifies for SSD benefits, as well as veteran’s benefits. One set of benefits may offset the other, or the person might simply be unqualified to receive either benefit.

A complete review of the possibilities can help a veteran make a determination as to what the proper course of action should be. That action will ensure that the veteran receives the maximum level of assistance, should it be needed.
