SSDI fast-track list now includes prostate cancer

The Social Security Administration is not a bureaucracy without any heart. It may not always seem that way considering how often individuals who are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits wind up being denied their claim and have to go through the arduous appeals process. The agency makes an effort to suggest that the process is as easy as filing forms online, but it’s also wise to have the help of an experienced attorney.

Evidence that the SSA does have compassion can be seen in its list of conditions that warrant expedited consideration for compassionate reasons. The list is regularly updated and new conditions are added. To be included on the list the condition has to be so severe that it obviously meets the strict criteria that Social Security requires to grant payouts of SSDI or Supplemental Security Income.

Inclusion on the list doesn’t guarantee that benefits will be granted. What it does do is prompt officials to review the claim in a matter of days, rather than months, as is typical with most claims.

Among the 25 conditions that got added to the Compassionate Allowance list this year is prostate cancer. The caveat, though, is that it only applies to prostate cancer that has recurred and that has spread into the bones and organs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prostate cancer is second only to non-melanoma skin cancer as the most common form of cancer in U.S. men. That being the case, it seems to make sense that it should be included on the list.
