Money a major concern for many with brain injuries

After a traumatic brain injury has occurred, time is of the essence. In fact, many brain injury patients are told that they only have about 18 months to recover the memory and thinking skills that they lost as a result of their injury. After that, the damage can be permanent.

Luckily, there are many rehabilitative services available today for people with brain injuries, including at many centers throughout the country that specialize in treating patients with brain injuries. The only drawback is that the cognitive rehabilitation often recommended is usually very expensive.

Additionally, typical insurance policies do not cover extensive rehab for brain injury patients, and others drop coverage if it appears that the patient’s progress has plateaued. For this reason, brain injury patients and their families often go broke trying to get the treatment they are so desperate for. For some, their brain injuries prevent them from ever working again and making the money back.

Thankfully, Social Security Disability benefits may be available to brain injury patients who cannot work as a result of their conditions. For people who worked before the accident, Social Security Disability Insurance may be available, and for those who didn’t earn enough work credits and children, Supplemental Security Income may be available.

Suffering from a traumatic brain injury can have long-lasting effects on a person’s life. In fact, it is estimated that 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries occur each year and approximately 90,000 end up causing permanent brain damage. For these individuals, SSD can be a lifeline.
