A back or spinal condition can affect a Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) claim when it limits how long a person can remain seated. Being able to sit for short periods does not necessarily mean someone can sustain sedentary work throughout a normal workday. How does SSA evaluate sitting limitations?
SSA guidance states that a full range of sedentary work generally requires about six hours of sitting during an eight-hour workday. Normal work breaks are generally part of that schedule.
A serious back or spinal condition may limit that ability. Pain, numbness or other symptoms may prevent someone from remaining seated for long periods. The amount of time a person can sit and the need to change positions, can therefore affect the assessment.
What if frequent position changes are necessary?
Some people can sit for a period but need to stand or walk before a scheduled break. SSA considers these restrictions when assessing residual functional capacity (RFC), which describes what work activities a person can still perform despite medical limitations.
If someone needs to alternate sitting and standing more often than normal breaks allow, the range of sedentary work available may be reduced. The RFC should describe how often those position changes are needed.
This restriction does not automatically qualify someone for SSDI. It is one part of the broader disability assessment.
How can sitting limits affect an SSDI decision?
Medical records can show how a back condition affects sitting, standing, walking, lifting and other work activities. Imaging may establish a spinal condition, but a diagnosis alone does not decide whether someone is disabled.
SSA considers whether the person can perform past relevant work and, when required, adjust to other work. Age, education and work experience may also matter.
For a Los Angeles applicant with serious back pain, the key question is whether medically supported limitations leave enough functional capacity to sustain regular work.
