Mental health issues have been gaining more public awareness as several campaigns seek to lift the veil of mystery that many people see when it comes to this important public health topic. It’s not that more people are suffering from a mental impairment than ever before – it’s that mental and physical healthcare is advancing so well that doctors are able to diagnose – and treat – these conditions so that Los Angeles residents and people throughout the country can function.

But what about those people who can’t function because of their mental illness? What types of conditions do these people suffer from?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mood disorders are some of the most common mental health conditions. Depression, in particular, is one mental condition that affects millions of Americans. And, some cases of depression are so severe that everyday activities can be incredibly difficult.

There are other mental conditions that can leave a Los Angeles resident disabled and possibly in need of long-term professional healthcare. For instance, psychotic disorders and bipolar disorder can have a severe impact on a person’s thought process and decision making. In many cases a heavy schedule of medication is required simply to get people who are suffering from these conditions to the point where they can take care of even the smallest tasks. Mental health conditions are a serious concern, and many people who suffer from these conditions are left dependent on Social Security Disability benefits, which ensure at least some financial security.
