If you or a loved one is suffering from some type of disability, you may be able to receive much-needed help in the form of Social Security Disability (SSD) income. Though not all medical problems will qualify to receive SSD coverage, if you are unable to work because of your medical condition and that medical condition is expected to last at least one year, or will result in death, SSD benefits may be a real possibility.
However, filing for SSD benefits can be tricky and time-consuming, especially for California residents who have medical problems and expenses on their mind. In fact, they should also be aware that the Social Security Administration can be a difficult agency to navigate, especially on your own.
It is very important to apply for SSD as soon as possible after you have become disabled. This is because it can sometimes take up to a year to start receiving benefits. For those who are having difficulty supporting themselves and making timely payments on such important items as a mortgage and/or car, this waiting period could seriously affect their quality of life.
It must also be noted that applications can be time-consuming and tedious, especially when it comes to gathering and producing sufficient medical evidence that will support your case for disability. This kind of evidence will include:
- Medical records from doctors, therapists, hospitals, clinics and caseworkers
- Laboratory and test results
- Names and dosages of all medications
Many times, initial applications are denied for the lack of some of the above required information. If this is the case, then you will likely need help filing an appeal so that you can secure the SSD income you need and deserve.
