What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder refers to a series of mental conditions that affect your mood and energy level beyond the usual fluctuations. Living with any of these disorders can severely restrict your quality of life and independence:

  • Bipolar I disorder: This illness causes episodes of mania, which involves extremely high energy and elation and last at least 7 days. A depressive episode usually follows the manic episode.
  • Bipolar II disorder: This also causes alternating high and low episodes, but the “high” episodes are called hypomanic and are not as severe as in bipolar I.
  • Cyclothymic disorder: This involves chronic periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that are less severe than experienced in bipolar II.
  • Other bipolar And related disorders: Some people experience symptoms similar to the three conditions above but do not fit into any one category.

Sometimes, bipolar causes people to feel a mixture of manic and depressive symptoms at the same time. No matter what form bipolar takes, in severe cases it can make it impossible to continue working.
