A guide to preparing for the SSD process

The Social Security Disability (SSD) hearing is typically the most stressful segment of the process for those hoping to receive disability income. This is due to the discussion of how much your life has been impacted by your conditions. Luckily, there are some steps you can take prior to entering the hearing that can help you relieve stress and ensure the SSD application process is followed

Be on Time

Although this may seem like a mundane aspect of the process but there are numerous applicants who show up to the hearing late and make everyone wait. Administrative law judges have many cases to manage each day so they do not look favorably on tardiness.

Prepare for the Questions in Advance

Once the hearing begins, you will need to answer questions from the administrative law judge, your representative or a vocational expert. These questions will be related to your employment history, current condition as to why you cannot work, medical history, training and education, daily activities and even your current mental state. It is important to have the answers prepared in advance so you can provide accurate information.

Prepare to Discuss Simple Daily Tasks

Many SSD applicants do not take in consideration their limitation with regards to simple daily tasks such as standing, sitting, walking and carrying objects. Stating that you have not thought about it at the hearing does not bode well for your case so have an answer prepared in advance

Keep a Detailed Diary of your Daily Activities

For several weeks prior to the hearing, maintain a detailed diary of your daily activities. This should include all tasks performed (and associated pain) from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep. Also include how well you are sleeping at night and how you alleviate any discomfort including medications.

Consult An Attorney

The SSD process can be a stressful situation for the applicant and their family. By hiring an attorney to guide you through the process and following the aforementioned steps, you can relieve the burden of the process and enjoy a streamlined and successful hearing.
