SSD benefits are a long-standing source of financial aid

As politicians bicker back and forth about Social Security Disability and whether or not significant changes need to be made to the program, a recent article pointed out just how important this part of Social Security is for those who receive the monthly payments. Some of details may just surprise our Los Angeles readers.

For instance, the article noted that the average monthly benefit of $1,140 is in fact the primary source of income - and for some, the only source of income - for about 80 percent of those individuals who receive SSD benefits. This amount, as the article notes, is not far above the poverty line.

Perhaps the most misunderstood aspect of Social Security Disability is that it is not some new program that has only been in effect for a short time. The fact is that this part of Social Security has been around for nearly 60 years now, and it has become almost as much a part of the life of American workers as the more widely understood retirement benefits aspect of Social Security.

The reality, however, is that for those Los Angeles residents who suffer from a disability, whether it is cause by an injury or an illness, they may have a tough time meeting the requirements to receive SSD benefits. Even those who are facing an inability to work because of their disability may not be approved for benefits upon their first application, leaving them searching for answers to their many financial questions. The recent article noted that over 60 percent of applications are denied. This is why both first-time applicants and those who have already been denied Social Security Disability benefits need to consider if there are options they have not yet explored for getting approved.
