Depression Claims
Major depression and dysthymia are forms of clinical depression. Major depression is often triggered by a traumatic event. Dysthymia is chronic depression, which a person experiences consistently no matter what the circumstances. People with dysthymia can also suffer bouts of major depression. The SSA will look for evidence such as feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, sadness, suicidal thoughts, exhaustion, loss of interest in activities, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, weight changes, insomnia and excessive sleep. In addition to exhibiting symptoms of depression, the individual must also have a documented history of a minimum of two years of depression.
Anxiety Claims
The symptoms of anxiety disorder include panic attacks, irrational fear, compulsion, obsession, muscular tension, increased heart rate and increased breathing rate. To qualify for SSD/SSI benefits, the individual must provide evidence of problems with concentration, periods of decompensation or restriction of daily activities.
Bipolar Claims
Bipolar disorder used to be known as manic depression. It causes the individual to cycle between high (manic) states and depressive states. The manic states can involve feelings of euphoria, anger and impaired judgment. The depressive states manifest with the same symptoms as clinical depression.
Bipolar disorder is a listed impairment. To obtain SSD/SSI benefits, you need to provide the appropriate medical evidence to support the limitations on your ability to work.
