Taking your claim for SSD benefits through the appeals process

On Behalf of | May 31, 2016 | Social Security Disability Benefits

A previous post here discussed some important changes that are being made to the appeals process for Social Security Disability claims. As many of our Los Angeles readers know, the majority of claims for SSD benefits are denied at the initial application stage. However, even when a Social Security claim is denied, an applicant doesn’t have to give up hope of eventually being approved. It just might take a bit longer.

While an applicant who is denied SSD benefits may initially be disappointed, it is important to remember that the appeals process is in place in order to potentially correct mistakes that have been made. The first step is to notify the Social Security Administration that you intend to appeal the initial decision that has been made.

Of course, this first step is just one of many that may need to be taken in order to navigate the appeals process. As difficult as it may seem to put together the initial application for benefits, it can be just as difficult to go through the various stages of the appeal process — especially if the appeal goes past a hearing in front of an administrative law judge all the way to the Social Security Appeals Council.

At our law firm, we work with our clients to get a claim for SSD benefits past an initial denial and through the appeals process. In many cases, the effort to get through this process can be worth it.
