Know the definition of "disabled" for SSD benefits

There are many different terms that can be thrown out as blanket statements to cover groups of people in today's culture. However when it comes to legal terms, Los Angeles residents probably know that there are some very specific definitions that can be important. "Disabled" is a term that can be used loosely, but when it comes to applying for Social Security Disability benefits, there are certain aspects of the person's disability that must be present.

First, the disability, as viewed by the Social Security Administration, is looked at through the lens of the impact the disability has on an applicant's ability to work. The SSA will look at how an applicant was employed and what type of work was being completed prior to the onset of the disability, and then determine whether or not the disability that is described in the application will prevent the applicant from completing that job.

Next, the SSA will attempt to determine whether or not the applicant's purported disability will prevent that person from maintaining employment and working in any other meaningful capacity. Simply put, just because a person has a disability that prevents them from doing the job they have done for years does not mean that the person is not fit for another position of employment.

Lastly, the application for SSD benefits will need to make it clear that one aspect of the disability is that it will prevent the applicant from working for at least 12 months, or that it will result in the applicant's death. To show all of these different aspects of the definition of "disability," a Los Angeles resident who is applying for SSD benefits will need to be sure that they meet the medical requirements.
