Step 2: Reconsideration

The Reconsideration Process

The first step in the Social Security Disability (SSD) process is the initial application. However, only about 25 percent of applications are approved on the first attempt. If your application was denied, the next step is to apply for reconsideration.

At this point, it is a good idea to work with an experienced SSD/SSI attorney. Because we have worked with thousands of clients, we know how to analyze your initial application and develop a strategy to submit a stronger application for reconsideration. How We Can Help With Reconsideration

The overwhelming majority of Social Security Disability applications are denied initially. If you have received a denial, you have just 60 days to apply for reconsideration. This is a critical deadline, so it is important to start working on your application right away. You need to gather any new information that strengthens your case because your application for reconsideration will be reviewed by someone who was not part of the initial determination.

We can help you obtain the correct documents and medical information you need. We can also help you determine why your initial application was denied and find a way to correct the problem. In many instances, this involves listing all of your doctors, making sure the doctors specify all limitations and providing the correct dates of injury/illness.

You must apply for reconsideration in order to get a disability hearing, so talk to a lawyer soon after you receive your denial. The hearing is the next step in the SSD process if you are denied at reconsideration.
