Personalized Attention From An

SSD/SSI For Children

Los Angeles SSDI for Children Attorney

As a parent, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD) benefits may be granted for mental and physical health problems and for illnesses or injuries suffered by a dependent for whom you are responsible. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are available to a child younger than 18 if he or she meets Social Security’s definition of disability for children and if his or her income and resources are within the eligibility limits.

Children often have a harder time getting Social Security Disability/Supplemental Security Income benefits. It may be helpful to consult an attorney to present your strongest case for your child. The Disability Rights Law Center can help. For a free consultation, please call 213-784-4386 or contact us online.

Our Experience Can Get Your Child Benefits

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), to be considered disabled and eligible for SSI, a child under age 18 must meet each of the following requirements:

  • The child must not be working and earning more than $1,000 per month in 2010.
  • The child must have a physical or mental condition, or combination of conditions, that results in “marked and severe functional limitations” that very seriously limit the child’s activities.
  • The condition(s) must have lasted, or be expected to last, at least 12 months; or must be expected to result in death.

The state agency can take three to five months to decide if a child is disabled. However, for some medical conditions, SSI payments are made immediately and for up to six months while the state agency makes the decision. Some conditions that may qualify include:

  • HIV infection
  • Total blindness or total deafness
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Severe mental retardation (child age 7 or older)
  • Birth weight less than 2 pounds, 10 ounces

Dealing with the SSA and state agency can be challenging. Please call our office at 213-784-4386 to schedule an appointment with a Los Angeles SSDI for children attorney.
