Blindness And SSD

Vision impairment can be something you are born with, or the result of an accident or disease that occurs later in life. Common causes of blindness include:

  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Cataracts
  • Detached retina
  • Complications from diabetes
  • Brain injury

Some forms of progressive blindness can be halted or at least partly reversed, but other times, nothing can be done except to adjust to the situation.

Is Complete Blindness Necessary?

Total blindness is not required to qualify for SSDI or SSI. The Social Security Administration, which administers these programs, defines blindness as vision that cannot be corrected to better than 20/200, or field of vision no better than 20 degrees. The problem must have lasted or be expected to last at least 12 months.

While many jobs are available to people with blindness or low vision, in many cases people who lose their sight must give up their jobs, losing considerable income opportunities. Our representation will help you make up your lost income and keep your household financially secure.
